This is a protest to the 18 amendment; people did not want their state to become a“dry” state.
Prohibition
In 1919 the eighteenth amendment was passed into the declaration, and right after that the Volstead act was passed to reinforce the eighteenth amendment. People that supported the amendment were called dry’s and others that opposed the law were known as wets. When this law was put in place during the 20’s we saw a large spike in organized crime. People either made alcohol in homemade stills or brought it in from other countries. Bootleggers sold the alcohol illegally to people. Al Capone, a Chicago gang leader was most famous for his bootlegging and other organized crime. Prohibition fueled the growth of organized crime. Speakeasies were also popular, these were places that were illegal but you could go and drink.
Homemade stills were very popular during prohibition; they were used to make illegal alcohol.
