Fundamentalism
is a Protestant Catholic belief in the strict upholds of literal interpretation
of the Bible. The fundamentalist movement thrived during the twenties in the
south and in agricultural areas around the United States. By the end of the
1920’s Fundamentalists had lost there following. The main reason for the
Fundamentalist movement was defend them against liberal theories. The major
beliefs of Fundamentalists were known as the “Five Fundamentals.” They were,
"The inspiration of the Bible and the inerrancy of scripture as a result of this, The virgin
birth of Christ, The belief that Christ's death was the atonement for sin, The bodily resurrection
of Christ, The historical reality of Christ's miracles."
One major case that came out of Fundamentalism is the Scopes
Trial. The scopes trial took place during the summer of 1925 in Tennessee. The
defendant of the case was John Scopes. The reason for Scopes trial was because
he was accused of teacher an evolution class. The dilemma that was brought up
throughout the case was,“Could state
could proscribe the teaching of any science that appeared to contradict the
Bible?” The case was brought to
Tennessee Supreme Court and the outcome of the trial was that Scopes had
actually broken the law.
